Acupuncture is one of the most widely accepted forms of complementary medicine. Because is has been shown to be so effective, safe and free from side effects, more and more GP’s and others within the NHS are recognising it as something that could benefit patients and therefore have a place in mainstream healthcare.
Acupuncture is a system of medicine that is over 2000 years old. It has survived and grown simply because it has proved time and time again that it is effective, safe and adaptable to the individual. Acupuncture is based on the premise that the quality of your Qi determines your state of health. If your Qi is in balance, health is maintained; but when out of balance, illness and disharmony result. Imbalances in your Qi can come about from a variety of factors. Some examples include stress, poor diet, physical or emotional trauma, excessive emotional states, infections or overwork.
What to expect from an acupuncture treatment
Acupuncturists work to establish the cause, nature and location of an individual’s imbalance, and the most effective way to treat it. This is commonly done by the insertion of fine needles into particular areas of the body, known as acupuncture points. These points lie on channels (or meridians), which circulate Qi throughout the body. By fine tuning the Qi in the channels, acupuncturists aim to achieve balance, health and harmony of each individual.
Treatment also often consists of other techniques in place of, or in conjunction with, the needles, where deemed appropriate. These techniques include massage, acupressure, moxibustion (the use of a burning herb around areas of the body to create warmth and energy), cupping (suction cups that draw out toxins or pathogenic factors) and advice (usually surrounding the likely causes of the imbalance and possible ways of addressing these).
What can acupuncture help with?
Acupuncture restores health simply by rebalancing the flow of Qi in both the organ systems and the meridians of the body, so any condition can be treated. It is equally effective in the treatment of both acute conditions (colds, flu, recent muscle sprains, urinary infections etc) and the more chronic, stubborn disharmonies. Some examples are:
High blood pressure
Stress
Migraines and Headaches
Menstrual disorders
Menopausal symptoms
Infertility/ Subfertility
Pregnancy/ Labour/ Post-natal problems
Musculo-skeletal pain and/ or stiffness
Asthma/ Bronchitis
Arthritis
Low energy
Digestive disorders
Hay fever/ Sinus problems
Other immune related disorders
Addictions
Insomnia
Anxiety and/or Depression
This list is not exclusive, these are just some of the many conditions where acupuncture has been found to be effective.
For the more serious illnesses where Western medical drugs are essential and lifesaving, acupuncture is very often successfully used in alleviating unwanted drug side effects, improving quality of life considerably.
How safe is acupuncture?
All Anahata Acupuncturists are members of an acupuncture professional association which adheres strictly to the Codes of Professional Conduct, Safe Practice and Ethics, and have achieved the required level of training to become a qualified Acupuncturist, currently set at degree standard. The Code of Safe Practice ensures that all needles used are single use, pre-sterilised and disposable. Once used the needles are discarded in the appropriate manner, so there is no risk of infection.
All our acupuncturists are fully trained, qualified, and registered with the relevant professional body, the main one in the UK is the British Acupuncture Council.
Also available as part of our Low Cost Acupuncture Clinic: ear acupuncture, cupping, electro-acupuncture.
Women’s health
Acupuncture is a natural healing practice that eases the flow of energy in the body: so it is particularly important for women’s health, to help women through the many cyclical changes, every month, as well as transitions from girl to woman to mother to mature/wise woman.
Acupuncture is especially helpful for women’s health, by smoothing the hormonal changes – many women coming to acupuncture for various reasons are amazed and delighted to discover that their menstrual cycle is regulated, with less pain, so they no longer have to put up with a monthly ‘curse’.
Acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular for fertility issues: to aid conception, and support during IUI and IVF.
Acupuncture is also helpful during pregnancy and childbirth: for nausea, anaemia, back pain, constipation… as well as to help turn breech babies, naturally help to induce a baby… and during childbirth itself.
Acupuncture can ease ‘pregnant problems’ gently and naturally, without the use of un-necessary medication in these delicate times. Pregnant women react very well to monthly regular acupuncture sessions, to ease and support your pregnancy.
Acupuncture is good to ease the flow of energy, into and throughout menopause – by strengthening and cooling the body before the onset of menopause, thus giving a more balanced transition, without too much stress, upset or anxiety!
Women’s testimonials
“I only tried to have children at the age of 44, then fell pregnant and miscarried 5 times, between 10-20 weeks pregnancy. Then I started to have hot flushes, and thought I was starting my menopause… instead I discovered I was pregnant again, and thought this would be my last chance to have a baby, so I decided to try acupuncture. Initially I had weekly sessions, until I was over the danger period of 21 weeks, then I went fortnightly.
Acupuncture helped me in many different ways: to stop feeling nauseous; to keep the hot flushes away; to clear heartburn, indigestion, piles; even maintain my blood pressure! I felt confident and less tired after each visit. My mind was in a much better place during this pregnancy: all the other pregnancies I worried continually that I was going to lose the baby, for this one I did have fears but I was able to keep them at bay.
I thought I had an easy pregnancy but now I realise it was a full on pregnancy: I was short of breath, suffering headaches and heartburn… after each session I would feel great: it enabled me to carry on a normal life. Each kick I felt spurred me on, and now I have a very healthy boy!” — T. A.
“I had acupuncture throughout my second successful pregnancy. In the beginning I struggled with digestion and a terrible feeling of being overheated. The acupuncture was phenomenal – within days of the first session the heat began to die down, and my digestion system felt as if it was being cooled and controlled. I felt noticeably less sick, uncomfortable and my energy seemed to heighten. At the same time, I also began to be able to think, and focus on the tremendous anxiety I felt about losing the pregnancy, which had happened several times in the past.
I carried on through the second and third trimesters. Throughout all this time, I found that symptoms such as soreness in my hips and back, and tiredness and general worry were all very much relieved by the sessions. There was a remarkable speed to the relief, and I often arrived feeling tired and worn out, leaving with much more energy.
Looking back, I am sure that the physical symptoms were in part a manifestation of emotional worries – and while I knew that worrying was futile, my body struggled to manage the anxiety that was deep inside. I believe that the acupuncture contributed to a successful pregnancy and ultimately to a very relaxed, happy and cheeky little baby girl.” — K. A.
